Abstract:
The mechanism of diffused water through the surface of archaeological Obsidian blades, a mainly temperature dependent and concentration-driven phenomenon, related to the obsidian hydration dating (OHD), is a subject of ongoing development regarding limitations and reliability and the interest in OHD is revived recently.
Sixty-six years ago, the dating of obsidian stone tools from the last time they were used by prehistoric people had been proposed, observing that a newly exposed surface of obsidian takes on water from the environment at a known rate that can be used to calculate the time elapsed since exposure.
Obsidian hydration dating (OHD) has been a concern of research into chronological issues of ancient obsidian artifacts. It is based on the power law equation that hydration rim is proportional to the square-root of time relating hydration depth, diffusion rate (k). Employing the Arrhenius plot experimental aged data at high and low temperature were used to estimate the k at environmental hydration temperature (T). As a result a new calibration equation has been produced with satisfactory ages.
A review shall be presented of dating attempts, the limitations and prospect of current directions of the OHD (empirical method, the phenomenological method SIMS-SS, alternative methodologies in calculating the hydration rim).
